In Chapter 22, Will prepares for his transfer to another hospital. At the exit door, however, he is greeted by Stella, who asks him to accompany her to the nearby park to see the holiday lights. He warns her that this is a dangerous idea, but she insists. They arrive in the park and make snow angels, then slide out onto the ice of a frozen pond.
This is foreshadowing for the end of the novel when Stella will make the decision to seize the day and take Will to see these same lights. When you have CF, you sort of get used to the idea of dying young. No, I'm terrified for my parents. And what will become of them if the worst does happen, now that they don't have each other.
